The South

Where tea is sweet and accents are sweeter; summer starts in April; front porches are wide and words are long; macaroni and cheese is a vegetable; pecan pie is a staple; Y’all is the only proper pronoun; chicken is fried and biscuits come with gravy; everything is darling and someone is always getting their heart blessed. -unknown

Precious Memories

A note from Brent:

I know we all have tough days that invoke memories of loved ones who have passed on to their eternal reward. Today is such a day for me. For those who didn’t know my sister, Amanda, she was 12 years old when she left this life on April 2, 1996, after a life of medical problems and even a heart transplant. So, in her honor, I would like to share a memory.

On February 14, 1996, I went to my college mailbox to get what I hoped would be something from home (Texas) with a few bucks inside. Mom was good for a few bucks from time to time, which was quickly spent on a sweet tea and hash browns at Waffle House. What I found instead was a small carefully handwritten envelope with a homemade Valentine card inside from Amanda. I’m sure she spent a couple of hours drawing and coloring the hearts on front and composing the message inside. Part of the message was this, “Please hurry and come home soon. I’m bored!” No offense to my brother, Byran, but she always thought of me as the fun and crazy one. She also called me “MacGyver” because she thought I could fix anything. Her personality was such that she was always thinking of other people and spending her allowance on gifts for people to cheer them up. I remember fondly how that Valentine card put a smile on my face, because I knew she was thinking of me. Well, today I am thinking of her. I still miss her, but she had to “leave the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God.” (Ronald Reagan)

I'm crying...She, as well as all those gone before, does make heaven so much sweeter. Thank you for sharing this.

Wow, I had no idea about this part of your history. Thanks for sharing. It makes the idea of going Home even sweeter.

I recently read a caring bridge site of a four year old girl who died of a noncancerous tumor in her brain. Her parents said that their feet are planted less firmly in the earth now that someone so close and special to them is in heaven. That really articulated how I now feel since Dad is there. It's still unknown to me, but I do know he will be waiting for me. What a sweet memory of Brett's sister. Thanks for sharing.

What thoughtful sentiments. I did not know that he had a sister. I'm sure that she is very proud of your family! I agree with Kristin, that our feet feel less firmly planted to the ground when loved ones are waiting in Heaven.
